Paso Robles has a winemaking history that dates back to the late 1700s, when Spanish missionaries planted some of the region’s first grapevines near Mission San Miguel Arcángel for sacramental wine production. Commercial viticulture began to expand in the late 19th century as settlers recognized the area’s warm climate, rolling hills, and diverse soils as ideal for grape growing.

By the early 1900s, Paso Robles had developed a reputation for robust Zinfandel wines and hospitality, with travelers often stopping in the region for its famous hot springs and local wines. Like much of California wine country, the area faced setbacks during Prohibition, which significantly reduced vineyard plantings and winery activity.

A major revival began in the 1960s and 1970s when pioneering growers and winemakers replanted vineyards and experimented with premium varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhône grapes, and Bordeaux blends. Advances in vineyard mapping and a deeper understanding of Paso Robles’ varied microclimates helped elevate the region’s reputation for quality wine production.

Today, Paso Robles is recognized as one of California’s most dynamic wine regions and home to more than 200 wineries. From small family-run vineyards to acclaimed wineries, the region is known for producing wines with depth, character, and a distinctive sense of place that reflects the rugged beauty of California’s Central Coast.

Paso Robles is known for having one of California’s most diverse vineyard soil compositions, a major reason the region produces such a wide range of high-quality wines. With over 50 recognized soil types, the soils were formed by ancient sea beds, volcanic activity, river deposits, and uplifted marine terraces, creating complex growing conditions across its rolling hills and valleys.

The Forge & Vine vineyards are carefully planted in calcareous soils rich in limestone and chalk, which are prized for their ability to retain water while still providing excellent drainage. These soils are especially valued for Cabernet Sauvignon because they help develop concentration, structure, minerality, and balanced acidity.

Possessing a warm Mediterranean climate that is ideal for growing premium wine grapes, Paso Robles endures hot, sunny days paired with dramatically cooler nighttime temperatures, often shifting by 40–50°F in a single day. This large diurnal temperature swing helps our grapes achieve full ripeness while preserving their natural acidity and freshness.

Paso Robles receives abundant sunshine throughout the growing season, with relatively low annual rainfall concentrated mainly in winter months. The area’s varied elevations, rolling hills, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean create numerous microclimates across the region. Cool marine air flows inland through the Templeton Gap, moderating temperatures and helping extend the growing season in many vineyard areas.

We cultivate our vines with a focus on sustainable integrity and hand-crafted precision, allowing the unique terroir of our region to truly define every bottle. All our fruit comes from within the Paso Robles AVA where grape variety is carefully matched with vineyard location and farming technique in order to produce the desired characteristics of each. varietal.

Forge & Vine emphasizes environmental stewardship, water conservation, worker welfare, and long-term soil health. Synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers are avoided throughout the vineyards. We also incorporate modern sustainability practices, including solar power, cover crops, composting, and even battery-powered autonomous tractors to reduce environmental impact.
